Spotting a Puppy Scam Before You Send a Dollar

By Furpi Editorial · 4 min read

Reverse image search the puppy photo

Right-click the photo (or long-press on mobile) and reverse-image search it. If the same picture shows up on dozens of other listings, it's a scam.

Refuse wire transfers, gift cards, or crypto

Reputable breeders take credit cards, certified checks, or escrow services. Anyone asking for Western Union, Cash App, Zelle from a stranger, or gift cards is running a script.

Insist on a live video call

The number-one tell. Scammers refuse to show you the puppy on a live call. Reputable breeders are proud to give you a tour of the litter — even unannounced.

Cross-check the breeder's registration

AKC, TICA, CFA, ACFA, UKC, and most parent clubs publish their member rosters online. Search the breeder's name there — if they don't show up, ask why.
