What to Look For in a Reputable Breeder

By Furpi Editorial · 6 min read

Why this matters

The pet you're about to bring home will live with you for the next 10–18 years. The breeder who raised them shapes their early temperament, health, and confidence more than any factor that comes after. Picking the right breeder isn't a luxury — it's the most important step.

Six green flags

1) Health testing is public. Look for documented OFA, Embark, eye exams, or breed-club mandated tests on the parents. 2) The breeder asks you questions. Reputable breeders interview you — pet for pet — before they'll consider a placement. 3) Parent dogs or queens live in the home. 4) Lifetime take-back contract. 5) Transparent waitlist policy and no pressure to deposit instantly. 6) References from previous puppy/kitten families.

Four red flags

1) The breeder has every breed under the sun. 2) You can't visit, video-call, or see the parents. 3) Prices that feel "too good to be true". 4) Pressure to wire money, use gift cards, or pay through unusual payment apps.

Questions to ask

What health tests have you run on the parents? Can I see the puppy's parents? What's your take-back policy if life changes? How do you socialize the litter? What's your veterinarian's name and can I call them?
