Golden Retriever — Breed Guide

By Furpi Editorial · 5 min read

Temperament

Affectionate, patient with kids, eager to work. Anxious if isolated for long periods — not the right breed if you're gone 10 hours a day.

Exercise needs

60–90 minutes of varied activity per day, ideally with a mix of off-leash sniffing, water play, and brain games. They are working dogs, not jogging companions exclusively.

Grooming reality

They shed twice a year for six months at a time. Brush 3–4 times per week, deshed during seasonal blowouts, and budget for a professional groomer every 6–8 weeks.

Health watchpoints

Hip and elbow dysplasia, certain cancers (especially hemangiosarcoma), and progressive retinal atrophy. Insist on OFA hip/elbow, ophthalmology, and Embark genetic testing on both parents.
